- What resources will you need to carry out your plan (video, reading, experts or colleagues, etc)?
One resource I will need is time. Since my goal is to change at least two lessons in each class over a semester I will need to set aside time to accomplish this task. The resource that I already have is the new knowledge I am constantly gaining through my Master’s courses. I have plenty of ideas that I want to use in my classes I just need the foresight and planning to know when things will fit well and add to the lesson components.
My other goal is to work collaboratively with others. To achieve this goal I wanted to either teach a professional development workshop in my classroom on a new technology I have learned about that would be helpful to a large part of the staff or to compile a mini-textbook that has good links, resources, etc. for each content area. There have been so many good resources, videos, and websites in this course that I think could help the staff at my school easily integrate technology into their existing lessons.
- What additional information do you need?
For the first goal I need to create a journal to document what I have done and how it improved student achievement/learning. I also need to set up my Outlook calendar on my district laptop and schedule in the time slots to work on lessons.
For the second goal I need to put out a staff email to see if there is more interest for a professional development opportunity in my classroom or for a mini-textbook with links, resources, and websites.
- What steps have you been able to take so far?
This week I was able to implement Webspiration in my Business Law classes. Students did not seem to make very good connections between their learning and the last assessment. I started this Chapter with students skimming the chapter for important information and then transferring their ideas into a Concept Map using Webspiration. Most students created a map using one of the templates. I modeled how I would break the content up and how it would best make sense for me. I also told the students how I pictured they would use their Concept Map in the future to study for their test, to see which connections were still fuzzy and needed a clearer understanding, and to help visualize while taking the assessment if there was a question they did not understand.
As for my second goal I have not taken any steps so far other than to speak with colleagues I know to see if they had interest in either of the scenarios.
Azizeh Family,
ReplyDeleteI agree that trying to find the time to attain your goal can be very challenging. I am so glad that by taking this course, it is allowing me the time to plan ahead which is the most difficul task. Now that I am preparing, I should be able to execute my goals more easily. One of my goals were to engage in professional growth and leadership. It is an excellent idea to have a journal beacuse it will help keep you accountable so that you will reach your goal. Also, you can reflect on what new technologys were implemented and how it affected student achievement. I have found that when I learn new technology, if I do not incorporate it into my instruction immediately, then I tend to not use it later so the journal would help me with that challenge. I am planning on having a session where I can invite teachers to come after school so that I can share some of the strategies that I have learned while taking this course. I will prepare light refreshments this tend to help increase participation.
The idea to create a journal is a good one. Journals help students to synthesize the learning and it can do the same us as teachers. It can serve as a very important record that you can share with your colleagues. I will start a journal as well. Thanks for the isea.
ReplyDeleteI think that you are on the right track and time is always an issue for teachers; especially good ones. When creating your journal you could use a software program to record your thoughts on instead of typing it in each week/day. Also you could make a sign up list for teachers to add their names if they are interested in attending or teaching a technology development class and post it in the teachers lounge.
ReplyDeleteHi Cristina,
ReplyDeleteI also find that it is hard to schedule time to incorporate technology into my lessons. I think it is great that you plan to schedule time into your outlook calendar to change or tweak a lesson. Perhaps taking one prep once a week can do this. Starting small will work up to something bigger. I am very happy that you were able to use the concept mapping for your business law class. How did your students like using technology to do this? Did they find it helpful? I find that my students at first think that using the technology is weird, and then when you don't use it for a lesson, they miss it.
I know that I have similar issues when it comes to time as a resource. I have found that the idea of changing lessons is more overwhelming than taking the time to actually do it. I suggest to start small with easily attainable goals and build as you have more success. I know that is what worked best for me. I started by changing pieces of lessons rather than wholesale shifts. After some success, larger changes were easier and less stress on my mind.
ReplyDeleteHi Cristina,
ReplyDeleteThat is great that your students used Webspiration. A finished map can make such a good study sheet -- if students collaborate on a map they can fill each other's gaps and help scaffold the organization of ideas. Maps could even be placed in a wiki so students could access each other's completed work.
Thank you for posting.
